As the post immediately below suggests, we're going to use this blog as an informal way of expressing somewhat less-academic and admittedly less rigorous viewpoints than those found in EconoPundit..
Everything in this weblog, Table Pads, is based on our position as a small Chicago manufacturing/retailing operation.

Important Data Coming on Tuesday
Yahoo! News - Stocks to Heed Data and Dollar: "Next week's calendar of data includes the Conference Board report on consumer confidence due on Tuesday. That report often tracks the University of Michigan [consumer confidence] report. "
On the basis of our Chicago retail experience, we are predicting an extremely unpleasant surprise on Tuesday. We think consumer confidence will be way, way down, much lower than expected. Trust me, I'm not happy to say this.

134,000 Lost Jobs in August 'Mass Layoffs' (washingtonpost.com)
134,000 Lost Jobs in August 'Mass Layoffs' (washingtonpost.com): "Illinois had 50 mass layoffs in August, according to the BLS. Brenda A. Russell, director of the Illinois Department of Employment Security, said the state has lost manufacturing and wholesaling jobs, and is developing an economic development network statewide that it hopes will create a system to alert officials of impending plant cutbacks and closings. "
We are feeling this in our retail operation. It feels like the recession is either not over yet, or possibly starting again. This does not feel good.

Everyone had the same experience...
Here's a cute little story that reminds us how much in common all those newcomer-immigrants had with all those native-born Americans. Everyone sat together with their family around the dining room table: "At Passover, when grandparents and cousins would huddle around the dining-room table, not only were the matzos likely to be Manischewitz, so were the sticky, too-sweet wine and the sticky, after-dinner macaroons."

Ahem...
Actually, we recommend Superior. McKay Table Pad vs Ohio Table Pad - which is better?: "Which table pad is better? Any recommendations? I was able to look at the Ohio Table Pad website which was informative, but can not find anything on the McKay Table Pad. One Sales Rep recommended the McKay (said they sell both but prefers McKay) and another said that Ohio Table pad is the best.
??????"

Dining Room Table Still At the Center
"New umbilical cords tie young adults to parents":
Almost all dorms are wired for the Internet now. As a result, it seemed that whenever I was at work on my computer, an instant message from my son would pop up and we'd have a casual little 10-minute chat, just as we did when he lived at home. My husband could help him with his calculus problems over the Internet, too between e-mail and instant messaging just as he did years ago, sitting at the dining room table with homework papers spread out around them.
A set of table pads in this situation would surely help keep the table looking new!

Why not buy a table pad instead?
From California:
If your dining room suite is old and tired and the budget won't stretch to buy new, consider painting each of your chairs in a different color, or paint the host and hostess chair in one color and the rest in another.

Small manufacturing continues to face hard times...
AP Wire | 08/18/2003 | Weight of the world bears down on Minnesota furniture manufacturer: "Bottemiller concedes that the bank's decision on continuing financing is 'everything' to Homecrest. And he candidly admits his company wouldn't be waiting for a banker's verdict if he had been better able to deal with the global forces - particularly competition from China - that have produced three straight years of multimillion-dollar losses."
Don't they know
they can turn them over and use the green felt side up? Anyway check this out:
ATLANTA - It's close to midnight in a plush stucco home snuggled in a gated metro Atlanta community as seven middle-aged guys level cold-eyed stares at one another around an oval-shaped dining room table. Lightning crackles outside and, occasionally, inside, too.
They're good friends, sure, but this is poker, and money is involved and brains and skill and, most of all, egos, which swell or go bust with every card that flops and every casino-grade clay chip tossed onto the thick brown table pad. And now, they have television shows to back them up.
